I enjoyed planting up this shallow reclaimed stone sink with a variety of alpine plants and raised it up on salvaged stone bobbins.
Taking advice from the Alpine Garden Society , alpine stone troughs need good drainage, so that water cannot rest around the plant or its roots.
Excess water must be able to drain away quickly. In order to do this I have used 50/50 compost and alpine grit, finished with a top dressing of grit.
I also drilled a few drain holes through the base of stone trough for water to get away. I covered the drain holes with mesh to stop clogging up with soil.
In the Autumn I’m planting Tete a Tete daffodil and snowdrop bulbs for early spring colour in amongst the alpines.
