Stone Troughs

Hand carved from a single block of stone, stone troughs have been in existence for many hundreds of years. Purpose made for use on farms, stables yards and old mills to provide water for animals. They were also often located on roads, turnpikes and canal towpaths, providing water for horses, mules, and donkeys which were moving people and goods around the UK.

There is no real way to date a stone trough, however a very worn and weathered trough can give some indication of age. Sometimes dates will be carved into the stone by the stone mason or farmer who would have made it.
